The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), otherwise known as the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS), has revealed that as of December 23, 2024, the total number of inmates in its custody is 79, 237, of which 77,535 representing 98 percent are males and 1,702 representing two percent are females.
According to the information obtained on the Service website, 26, 718 inmates representing 34 percent are convicted, of which 26, 303 are males and 415 are females.
The Service noted that of the inmates in its custody, 52, 519 are awaiting trial, representing 66 percent, of which 51, 232 are males and 1,287 are females.
The service also revealed that inmates convicted for non-custodial measures as of 23rd December 2024, stand at 433, of which males are 403 and females 30.
The total number of those sentenced to community service is 295, of which males are 277, and females are 18.
While 24 male inmates are on probation, 64 are under the category of restorative justice, of which 52 inmates are males and 12 inmates are females and those in the category of others are 50 male inmates.
