Resident doctors in Nigeria, under the umbrella of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), have called off their indefinite strike action embarked upon about a week ago.
The doctors announced the calling off of the strike after the intervention of the Governors Forum, led by Governor Kayode Fayemi.
In a press statement signed by the Head of Media of the Governors Forum, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, Fayemi urged the doctors to always be guided by good conscience, pointing out that they should know that their strike could only affect the common man not the people in power.
Among the reasons given for the strike include unpaid salaries, non-payment of hazard allowance, and lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in hospitals for the doctors attending to COVID-19 patients.
Earlier, the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige revealed that the federal government has recently released N4.5 billion to 31 federal teaching and medical centres in the country.
The fund is expected to cover hazard and inducement allowances for April and May.
