A tragic auto accident on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway early Monday morning has claimed the lives of nine people and left three others injured. The fatal crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. at the Ayetoro corridor of the expressway.
According to Florence Okpe, Chief Route Commander and Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, the accident involved 13 adults—10 males and three females. Okpe, speaking on behalf of the Sector Commander, Fasakin Akinwumi, confirmed that six males and three females died in the incident, while three individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The vehicles involved were identified as a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number UYY 165 ZY and a truck bearing the plate number DKA 244 XC.
Okpe attributed the cause of the crash to excessive speed and driver fatigue, which led to the loss of control of the bus, causing it to collide with a stationary truck parked by the roadside.
“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were excessive speed and fatigue, which led to the driver losing control and ramming into the stationary truck,” Okpe explained.
The injured victims have been taken to Famobis Hospital, Mowe, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Idera Morgue, Sagamu.
Sector Commander Fasakin Akinwumi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, condemning the recklessness of some drivers who fail to observe the stipulated speed limits and ignore the 15-minute rest break required after every four hours of driving.
Akinwumi extended his condolences to the families of the victims and urged them to contact the Mowe Unit Command for further details.
