In a heartfelt interview on Talk to B, renowned Nigerian actress and producer, Nike Peller shared the frustrations that led her to step back from her acting career and the challenges she’s faced in her personal life.
The actress revealed that disheartening practices within the Nigerian film industry contributed heavily to her decision to step away, citing the discouragement she felt due to the marketers’ “selfish” approach to film distribution.
“I was tired of acting at a time because the marketers are very frustrating and selfish,” Peller explained.
She revealed how filmmakers often find themselves at a financial disadvantage when trying to distribute their work, noting that marketers significantly undervalue films. “For instance, if you spent about N5 million, they will now want to buy it at about N1.5 million. You have lost,” she said, explaining that the financial returns seldom cover production costs, let alone generate profit.
Due to these setbacks, she had to shelve three films she funded, leaving them unreleased to date.
The actress confessed that the unfair system drained her passion and prompted her to “abandon” acting temporarily, adding that this hiatus is why fans haven’t seen her on screen in recent years.
However, her love for acting remains intact. “Acting is my career and I love it. Now I am open to jobs,” she shared, signalling her readiness for a comeback.
Peller also touched on her private life, hinting at the toll that her career and personal expectations have taken on her relationships.
Reflecting on her marriage, she mentioned that many of her peers in the film industry face similar issues.
Her first marriage didn’t work out, but she moved forward with resilience. “No woman does not want to have a husband,” Peller said, but acknowledged that she has found peace and understanding with her current partner, a private man who she believes “was sent by God.”
In opening up about her journey, Nike Peller offers a glimpse into the personal and professional trials that often go unnoticed by fans. She remains hopeful for the future, committed to her career and new relationship, and is optimistic that things will work out both on and off the screen.
