The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Hassan Bello, on Friday November 27, 2020, assured Lagosians that the Ain Apapa, Lagos State, would be a thing of the past by first quarter of 2021.
Bello, who stated this when he received members of the National Advisory Committee set up by the President on African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) added that the government was making frantic efforts to tackle the gridlock, which has become a menace on the route.
He said that the government has devised a scientific means of tackling the problem, saying “First, we have to make the ports digital and contactless. No need to go to the port to make payment or other transactions. All these activities will now be online”.
According to him, the government is concluding plans to introduce rail and barges through the inland waterways for the delivery and evacuation of cargoes in Apapa Port, adding that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) would deploy electronic call-up system to manage traffic, and the Nigerian Custom Service would be on e-customs.
