The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has claimed that the current Speaker and first elected female Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, stepped down from her position.
Obasa made the assertion on Thursday, February 27, 2025, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, stating that Meranda resigned during a peace meeting held at the Lagos House in Marina last weekend.
“At the meeting held in Marina, which saw the attendance of all party leaders, it was made clear, with hopes that all members were present, that Meranda herself declared her resignation. She made it known that she has stepped down,” Obasa said.
The embattled lawmaker further questioned the legitimacy of his removal by 36 out of the 40-member Assembly, insisting that he remains the Speaker.
“I have never been removed. I am not against removal, but it must follow the rules of the House and the Constitution,” he maintained.
Obasa also addressed concerns over his security detail, stating, “When my security was withdrawn without my consent, did I complain?”
Earlier on Thursday, Obasa arrived at the Lagos State House of Assembly under heavy security, declaring himself as Speaker and presiding over a plenary session with only four lawmakers in attendance.
His claim of Meranda’s resignation has yet to be confirmed by the Lagos Assembly or the lawmakers involved.
The political crisis in the state legislature continues as both factions assert control over the leadership of the House.
