The Oyo State Government has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the African Students Union Parliament (ASUP) in the fight against drug abuse in the state.
The Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran revealed this today in Ibadan when the Parliament paid a visit to the Agency.
He said that the Board has put in some necessary measures to curb any form of vices including drug abuse in the state, noting that abuse of drugs destroys.
He urged the youth to desist from taking hard drug adding that drugs abuse leads youth into involvement criminal activities.
Speaking earlier, the Speaker of the Parliament, Rt. Hon. Kewul Abel, from University of Professional Studies, Accra, Ghana, sought the state government’s support in the Union’s ongoing sensitization programme against drug abuse in African, urging the state government to include Fight Against Drugs in its curriculum.
He said that it has become necessary for the union to collaborate with the government at all levels so as to curtail the drug menace in the continent adding that the rising cases of illegal consumption of prohibited substances, especially among youths is worrisome.
The Speaker also noted that there was an urgent need for the present crop of African leaders, especially in the education sector to build on the dreams of the founding fathers of the union, in order to salvage the decay in the education sector.
The Union while presenting a prestigious Icon of Nation Building Award to Adeniran described the recipient as a leader, whose life as an educationist, lawyer and politician is an inspiration to the youth.
Recounting Adeniran’s several exploits in the public service, Abel revealed that ASUP cherishes his achievements, which is a morale booster for younger ones.
In his remark, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Joseph Konan from Univerisite Felix Houpouet Boigny, Cote-d’ivoire praised the efforts of Adeniran in promoting Basic education sector in the state.
He, therefore, urged him not to relent in his quest to create an enabling environment for the younger generation, where the less privileged could have access to basic education.
