Oyo State Government has introduced another dimension to traffic management as it has directed the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA)to work in the night.
The agency, according to a statement has so far impounded 60 vehicles allegedly accused of violating traffic rules and regulations in Ibadan, capital of the state.
The night operation, according to the motorists is basically aimed at generating revenue for the government, adding that each vehicle arrested will not pay fine less than N20, 000.
Speaking on the operation, the Chairman of the agency, Dr. Akin Fagbemi said that in the course of the operations, 12 heavy-duty articulated trucks, 11 motorcycles, 28 cabs and buses and nine tricycles have been impounded for fragrantly violating traffic rules and regulations in the ancient city.
Fagbemi said the vehicles were impounded along Iwo Road Interchange, Agodi-Gate Bus Stop, Mokola Roundabout, Academy and the tollgate along Lagos Ibadan Expressway, in the night of Thursday and Friday 5 and 6 March, 2020.
He said, “This patrol is sequel to several public complaints on the recently noticeable traffic gridlocks occasioned by unruly drivers and illegal parking at certain parts of the state in the core of night. Our men and officers, therefore, embarked on night operations to ensure the free flow of human and vehicular movements particularly in Ibadan metropolis on Thursday”.
While he assured members of the public that OYRTMA would continue the exercise until sanity is restored on the highways, he also implored them to contact the agency in case of any traffic congestion.
