Parents and the newly admitted students into the University of Ibadan (UI) have appealed to the authority of the institution to revert to the former acceptance fees of N37,000, saying the majority of the parents cannot afford the N50,000 new acceptance fee.
Some parents who spoke to PrimeStar News noted that the school’s management should know that this is a hard time for Nigerians, hence, the management should be considerate.
One of the parents stated that the hike in the acceptance fee will make some newly admitted students to forfeit their admission, which is not the best for any developing nation.
A parent was quoted saying, “UI is now expensive and becoming an institution meant only for the rich. I already have a child in UI that I am struggling to sponsor. The younger one just got admission and they are saying that we should pay N50,000 acceptance fee. Where do they expect me to get it?”
According to information disseminated to the new students and their parents, titled, “2022/2023 Admission Exercise Payment of Acceptance Fee”, the candidates have been enjoined to go ahead to pay the fee to commence their registration.
The statement reads, “Candidates who have been offered provisional admission and have generated their admission letters on CAPS are hereby advised to proceed with the payment of a non-refundable Acceptance Fee of Fifty Thousand Hundred naira (N50,000.00) only. Candidates who are yet to generate their admission letters are advised to do so before payment of the fee. Request for a refund of the acceptance fee will not be entertained.”
The statement added, “The admission portal will open from Monday, 15 May to Friday, 23 June 2023. Please note that there will be no extension of the deadline.”
