A policeman attached to the Ajah Police Station on Sunday shot dead a female lawyer, Bolanle Raheem in the Ajah area of Lagos State.
It was gathered that the incident threw the community into confusion as the policeman, who was with a team of other policemen, fled the scene.
He was, however, caught and detained by the police.
Our correspondent learnt that Raheem, her sister, and four children were coming from an eatery in their car around 11am when the policeman tried to stop them.
A source said the woman was trying to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the policeman shot at her vehicle.
The bullet was said to have hit the victim; she was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that the officer was in custody.
He said, “The officer involved in the shooting is an ASP; he has been arrested, detained, and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigations.”
According to a statement, signed by the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, the police boss condemned the incident and commiserated with the family of the deceased lawyer.
Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police said, “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, NEAPS, FDC, CFR, has condemned the shooting and killing of Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, a lawyer who was allegedly shot and killed by a Policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State. “
He also added, “The IGP, who described the incident as unfortunate and sad, has ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the ugly and unprofessional act, which doesn’t portray the Nigeria Police Standard Operating Procedure and core values”.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Akorede Lawal, who reacted to the development in a tweet, described the incident as unfortunate.
Lawal noted that the President of the association, Yakubu Maikyau, was monitoring the situation.
The tweet read: “We are aware of this unfortunate incident. This is yet another crime against a lawyer. Regrettably, our member is gone. The NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, is right on this and we shall ensure that justice is duly served.”
Mrs Raheem’s death came some weeks after a 31-year-old man identified as Gafaru Buraimoh of Land Estate, Ajah, was shot dead by a police officer attached to the division.
It was reported that Gafaru was hit by a stray bullet while coming out of SkyMall in the night.
