At the intervention of the Osun State Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, the Osun State Police Command has arrested some policemen extorting money at the Iwo Road axis from some youth in the state.
In a video trending on Twitter, the Speaker was seen at a police checkpoint demanding that some money extorted from some youth be transferred back to the victims.
The visibly angry speaker was heard saying, “You people should video all these policemen collecting money from the people. Now, transfer the money you forced your victims to transfer to you back. Who collected money from you? You people should talk now. Tell us who collected money from you from among these policemen.”
Reacting, the Forced Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a tweet, “The Commissioner of Police Osun State, CP Kehinde Longe, has acted on this. The officers have been arrested, and necessary action would be taken. The PPRO Osun has been ordered to update us on the actions taken. We have zero tolerance for extortion and corruption in general.”
In a reaction by the Osun State Police Command, the Police officers involved in the unprofessional and unethical behaviour have been identified, arrested and detained.
According to a statement signed by the State PPRO, SP Opalola Yemisi Olawoyin, “The police Command frowned and condemned the act in totality as the erring police officers are currently in detention since Thursday, 10/08/2023 and undergoing investigation and eventual disciplinary procedure of orderly room trial for their unprofessional conduct while the senior officer among them has been queried accordingly.”
“The Commissioner of Police wishes to apprise the general public, most especially the good people of Osun State that, he will never condone any act of indiscipline and unprofessional conduct exhibited by any member of the Nigeria Police under his watch”, the statement concluded.
