Renowned Nigerian actress, Toyosi Adesanya, has broken her silence about the emotional and tumultuous journey of her marriage, providing a deeply personal account of her experiences.
In an emotional revelation, Toyosi explained how her marriage, which began on July 21, 2007, was filled with challenges, heartbreak, and perseverance.
She married in Akure, Ondo State, to her ex-husband, Dele, and despite her initial reluctance to discuss her personal life, she believes her story could serve as a lesson for others.
Adesanya’s marriage faced difficulties from the onset. Two months after their wedding, she discovered she was pregnant but later experienced a miscarriage, a trauma that repeated itself.
She detailed how, despite multiple attempts at fertility treatments, including laparoscopy and IVF, she continued to suffer miscarriages. This took a toll on her, both emotionally and financially, with her selling her gold jewellery to fund the treatments.
“I faced a lot,” she recalled, explaining how these events tested her strength and faith.
As Toyosi struggled to build a family, she was blindsided by another blow—her husband’s infidelity.
In 2013, Toyosi learnt through a friend that Dele had fathered a child with another woman. Despite her hope that her husband would confide in her, it wasn’t until a party that the other woman confronted Toyosi directly, revealing her pregnancy.
“That was when it occurred to me that another lady was pregnant for my husband,” she said, describing the shock and humiliation she endured during the incident.
Further complicating matters, her husband’s family began to pressure her. They brought the other woman and her child into Toyosi’s home, demanding that she accept the situation.
Tensions reached a peak when Toyosi was summoned to the Akure palace, where she was pressured to partake in a traditional ritual involving drinking from a calabash.
Advised by her mother and friends, she refused to participate in the ritual, though the emotional toll of the experience was significant.
Despite these challenges, Toyosi remained in the marriage but the emotional and psychological strain became unbearable.
In 2019, she suffered yet another miscarriage and endured a traumatic robbery in which her companion, Juwon, was tragically killed.
Toyosi further revealed that one of her apprentices she was training how to act also stabbed her in the back by sleeping with her husband. “My student slept with my husband. She caused me problems. She joined my husband’s family against me. I don’t trust anybody again”, she narrated.
By 2020, Toyosi made the difficult decision to leave the marriage.
After years of separation, with Dele spending long periods abroad, she received advice from a trusted figure to move out of their home, a decision that was met with celebration by her husband’s family. “The day I moved out, they celebrated,” she noted. Despite this, Toyosi holds no ill will towards her ex-husband, describing him as a kind man but acknowledging that their marriage is over.
Toyosi revealed that she is already in another relationship, waiting for her ex-husband to come to Nigeria so that they can legally be divorced. “I am still making efforts to have a child. God is a decider. I had an operation in 2022. I am in a new relationship. I was pregnant in 2022 but went through another operation. Currently, my doctor advised me to avoid going on surgery. So, for now, I forgo getting pregnant again”, she explained.
The actress also revealed the ugly of the Nigerian acting industry saying many actresses use their bodies to get roles in movies, adding that film producers and notable actors demand sex from girls to be given roles. “if it is written on the foreheads of girls boys sleep with, many houses would have been destroyed”, she added.
Toyosi’s story reflects her resilience and the complex emotional landscape she navigated throughout her marriage. She hopes that by sharing her journey, others facing similar struggles can find strength and learn from her experiences. While her marriage may have ended, Toyosi remains optimistic, focusing on the future and healing from the emotional wounds of her past.
