The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested popular TikTok influencer, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, for allegedly abusing and mutilating the Naira.
The arrest was carried out by operatives of the Kano Zonal Directorate of the anti-graft agency.
According to an official statement from the EFCC, Kunya was taken into custody for allegedly spraying Naira notes for fun during her stay at Tahir Guest Palace, a hotel in Kano.
Her arrest followed a month-long pursuit by EFCC operatives after she absconded while on administrative bail.
Kunya was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the country’s currency.
She was granted administrative bail pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano.
However, when the time came for her court appearance, she failed to show up, prompting the EFCC to intensify its efforts to apprehend her.
After weeks of surveillance and investigation, EFCC operatives successfully re-arrested the TikTok influencer on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
She is currently in custody at the Kano Zonal Directorate of the EFCC and is awaiting arraignment.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding laws that protect the integrity of the Nigerian currency, warning against acts such as spraying, stamping, or mutilating Naira notes during social events.
The Commission urged citizens to respect financial regulations to avoid legal consequences.
