The umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, today announced that the Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho has been released from Prison by the Government of Republic of Benin.
According to a statement issued and signed by Ilana Omo Oodua’s spokesperson, Maxwell Adeleye, titled, “Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo Ighoho released to Yoruba leader, Professor Banji Akintoye; French language expert, Adeniran by the Benin Republic Government”, Akintoye described the release as a triumph of truth over darkness in Yorubaland.”
The statement reads, “Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, has been released by the Government of Republic of Benin.
“The Activist was released on Monday to a Yoruba Leader and Leader of the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Banji Akintoye and a French Language Expert/ Deputy Alana of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Wale Adeniran.”
However, lead counsel to Igboho, Yomi Aliu (SAN), shed light on the development, saying that Igboho was conditionally released to be able to receive medical attention in Cotonou.
Pointing out that the conditional freedom was secured with the intervention of two prominent Yoruba indigenes, Professors Wole Soyinka and Banji Akintoye, Aliu said that Igboho’s release was under the agreement that he should not leave the medical centre or Cotonou for any reason.
Aliu said, “Praise should be given to two prominent Yoruba personalities, to, wit, Professor Wole Soyinka and Professor Akintoye for this turn around in our client’s matter.”
It would be recalled that the attempt of the Muhammadu Buhari-led government to exterminate Igboho due to his agitation for Yoruba Nation made him to attempt to run to Germany via Republic of Benin.
At the point of boarding a plane with his wife, Ropo, the duo were arrested at the Cadjehoun Airport in Cotonou by the International Criminal Police Organisation.
Prior to his escape from Nigeria, government secret police from the Department of State Security Service (DSS) carried out a dastard operation at his house where one person was killed and 12 of his supporters were arrested.
Series of offences were cooked against both Igboho and his arrested supporters.
