The Provost, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, Dr Yahaya Bunkure, on Tuesday September 8, 2020, appealed to the Kano State House of Assembly to put in place legislation that would increase the retirement age of lecturers in the college from 60 to 65.
Bunkure, who stated this when members of the college management paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the state assembly, Hon. Abdulazeez Gafasa, said that that the increment has become necessary to address the high rate at which the school is losing its best brain to early retirement.
Pointing out that 103 lecturers had obtained PhD degrees with the support of the institution, he regretted that Kano has been left behind in the implementation of the 65-years retirement age for lecturers among the Northern states in Nigeria.
“We are calling on the legislature to assist us towards the review and implementation of the retirement age, so that our students can gain more from the lecturers. I also wish to inform the assembly that so far, 20 of our academic staff have retired and soon, another 37 will also go on retirement. There is no plan so far to replace them. Therefore, we are appealing to the assembly to facilitate the replacement of the staff”, he concluded.
