An Ibadan-based legal practitioner and activist, Tunji Aladejebi has urged Nigerians to work together to ensure the achievement of the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs), stressing that it is the solution to the nation’s myriad problems.
Aladejebi stated this while presenting a keynote address at the Investiture of the 34th and 2nd female rotary president of Iyaganku Ibadan, Rotarian Adekemi Akinpelu.
He emphasised the imperativeness of the achievement of goals one and eight of the SDGs, which advocate for the eradication of poverty and encourage the provision of decent work and economic growth.
According to him, if these goals could be achieved, it would alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and boost the nation’s economic gap, pointing out that the two goals revolved around human development.
He also placed on record the necessity of giving education the rightful attention, arguing that tackling the electricity challenge in Nigeria would amount to solving 70 per cent of the nation’s problems.
Exchanging the baton of leadership, the outgone president, Olasupo Ijidale appreciated the resilience, steadfastness and financial commitments of the charter president, Senator Donald Omotayo Alasoadura and past presidents.
Ijilade said that he was able to record a huge success as a result of the unflinching support his members gave to him, hence, urged the members to extend the same support to his successor.
In her acceptance speech, Rotarian Akinpelu eulogised the good work of her predecessors.
She stated that Rotary is a charity organisation and the only organisation that has a seat in the United Nations organisation.
She, therefore, enjoined all to join hands with her to make the world a better place.
