The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has confirmed 40 ambassadorial nominees forwarded to it by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Among the nominees confirmed as at the time of filing this report are: Debo Adesina, Engr. Omar Suleiman, Mr. Kevin Peter, Chief Elejah Onyeagba, Prof. Monique Ekpong (F), Ominyi N. Eze, Yamah Mohammed Musa, Maj. Gen. C. O. Ugwu, Dr. Hajara I. Salim (F), Amb. Yahaya Lawal, Ademola Seriki, Chief Sarafa Tunji Isola, Adejare Bello, John. J. Usanga, Hamisu Umar Takalmawa, Philip K. Ikurusi, Hon. Tarzoor Terhemen, Al-Bashir Ibrahim Al-Hussain, Obiezu Ijeoma Chinyerem (F) and Ali M. Magashi.
Others are: Prof. M. A. Makarfi, Henry John Omaku, Sadiya Ahmad Nuhu (F), deshina Alege, Shehu Abdullahi Yibaikwal, Hon. Maureen Tamuno (F), Faruk Yabo, Abubakar Moriki, Adamu M. Hassan, Ibrahim Danlami Abubakar, Paul Oga Adikwu, Jazuli Imam Galandanci, Olun’dare Philip Awoniyi, Kayode Ibrahim Laro, Abioye Mohammed Bello, Zahra Mu’azu Omar (F), Mrs. Opunimi Orikaba Akinkugbe (F), Ms. Folakemi Akinyele (F), Mr. Suleiman Sani and Oma Djebah.
Few of the nominees have problems as they have been asked to be stepped down for one reason or the other.
For instance, Senator Yusuf Yusuf representing Taraba Central Senatorial District demanded that nominee from his state be stepped down because he is not known to him.
He said, “The Nominee from my State is not known to me, I don’t know him and therefore move for the Senate to step down his confirmation for further consultation”.
Also, Senator Bulkachuwa Adamu representing Bauchi North Senatorial District stated that the Committee suspended the screening of the Nominee from Niger State pending the resolution of the matter surrounding his nomination from his state.
He also noted that the Committee stood down the screening of the Nominee from Yobe State to a later date until issues relating to his nomination is resolved. Also, two other Nominees could not appear before the Committee due to the COVID-19 lock-down.
