Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari for given an approval to access the database of the National Identity Management Commission.
SERAP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, legal and advocacy organisation devoted to promoting transparency, accountability and respect for socio-economic rights in Nigeria, said the presidential approval to security agencies to access Nigerians’ personal details via NIN-SIM linkage contravenes the citizens right under Section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution.
The Group stated, “We’ve asked President Buhari to review and rescind within 7 days his reported approval for security agencies to unlawfully or arbitrarily access Nigerians’ personal details via NIN-SIM linkage.”
According to SERAP in a letter, “Private conversations of individuals – which belong to their intimate sphere and contribute to their personal development – also enjoy legal protection and can only be limited based on the principles of legality, necessity and proportionality.”
