Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Projects (SERAP) has alleged that there are corrupt practices in some institutions of learning, which needs to be investigated by the Federal Government and anti-graft agencies.
The institutions indicted are University of Ibadan (UI), the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State and the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa.
SERAP wants a claim made during the tenure of the former Vice Chancellor of UI, Professor Isaac Adewole, the nation’s former Minister of Health, bothering on the purchase of a Toyota Avensis car to the tune of over N9 million and which was said to have been stolen within few days after the purchase to investigated.
According to SERAP, “The University of Ibadan reportedly bought a Toyota Avensis with registration no 50A 03 FG for ₦9,339,750.00 in Dec. 2014 but was stolen few days after delivery”.
The organisation also wants an investigation into the sum of ₦4,006,800.00 that was paid as compensation into the private account of a staff who was no longer with the University around the period.
Regarding the Federal University Lokoja, the organisation alleged that over N5 million was paid into a private account of of the institution’s Vice Chancellor for a renovation project.
“The Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State also reportedly paid ₦5,249,460.00 into a Diamond Bank Account No. 0011525942, a private account of the Vice-Chancellor to renovate his rented residence, contrary to existing guidelines”.
It was also alleged that the institution reportedly paid ₦50,350,728.48 to some staff as professional allowances without any approval.
The organisation further alleged that the institution paid ₦657,274,348.51 as student’s ratio allowances despite the fact that these allowances were already consolidated in the Staff salary.
Regarding the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, the organisation alleged that the sum of ₦7,493,260.00 out of TSA Constituency Project Account number: 0330497061083 with the CBN on 31st December, 2016 was transferred without any payment voucher adding that the transfer could not be traced to any account held by the University.
The institution also reported to have spent ₦21,506,776.00 on unauthorised international travel without any receipts or air tickets, letters of invitation, workshop fee receipts, etc., as well as spending ₦8,249,600.00 on diesel without receipts.
