Against the Federal Government position aim at curbing the spread of Coronavirus in Nigeria, the six states in the South West Nigeria have agreed to reopen schools on Monday August 3, 2020 to enable the students in Senior Secondary School 3 to sit for the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The state are Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti.
The position was taken yesterday at a virtual meeting organised by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission (DAWN), which was attended by the states commissioners for Education, special advisers on Education and State Universal Education Board (SUBEB) chairmen.
According to a statement issued by DAWN and made available to the media, the states must ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 preventive measures.
It was agreed that upon resumption, schools would appoint incident managers and classroom wardens adding that there would be a designation of quality assurance department for the states to issue a safety compliance certificate to each school before reopening.
According to the statement, the states will approach the Federal Government at the first instance to seek a postponement of the WASSCE by at least three weeks from the proposed resumption date.
At the second instance, states are to directly approach WAEC to seek a postponement of the examination to the week begining August 24.
