A privately owned university by the President of Winner Chapel, Bishop Oyedepo, Covenant University may have succeeded in dethroning the University of Ibadan (UI), as the best university in Nigeria with the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking the former higher than the latter in its 2024 universities ranking.
While the Federal Government established UI in 1948 as a College of London University, Covenant was established in 2002 by Bishop David Oyedepo.
Though the two universities are ranked within the best 8001-10001 worldwide, the 2024 THE ranking ranked Covenant University best in Nigeria followed by UI.

Covenant University, which is situated in the Ota Area of Ogun State is among the top 1000 universities in the world.
Covenant University first gained prominence in 2018 when THE ranked it the best university in Nigeria with UI coming second.
