The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone D, revealed that contraband estimated at N126,560,131 was seized between January and June 2022, with three suspects arrested.
The Comptroller, FOU, Zone D, comprising Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Benue and Nassarawa states, Adesanmi Omiye, disclosed this at a press conference on Thursday.
He said the seizures were made because of the commitment and doggedness of operatives of the zone.
According to him, some of the items seized during various operations in the zone included 605 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, seven used vehicles which were used to convey the contraband, 54 bales of second-hand clothes, and 215 cartons of foreign soap.
He added that 3,000 litres of engine oil and 500 litres of petrol were also seized, including foreign spaghetti, dried donkey skins and urea fertiliser.
Omiye said, “We also arrested three suspects in connection with these seizures, but they were admitted to bail. What we are more concerned about is stopping this contraband from going into the market because of the implication it will have on the economy.”
He warned smugglers to repent from their nefarious activities, vowing that the NCS would not relent in its efforts at ridding the zone of smugglers.
