In a strategic move to enhance the livestock sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform initiative.
According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu announced the appointment on Friday, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to driving meaningful progress in the livestock sector and further strengthening national development efforts.
Professor Jega, a former vice-chancellor of Bayero University, previously co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Committee alongside President Tinubu. The committee developed comprehensive recommendations aimed at implementing sustainable livestock reforms across the country.
One of the key recommendations put forth by the committee was the creation of the Livestock Ministry, which has since been established and is now headed by a minister. This move is expected to foster structured development and regulation of the livestock industry, addressing long-standing challenges within the sector.
Jega, 68, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He is a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and currently serves as the pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in Kano State. His tenure as chairman of INEC, from 2010 to 2015, was marked by significant electoral reforms that enhanced Nigeria’s democratic process.
Onanuga stated that Jega’s appointment as special adviser to President Tinubu would reinforce the gains of the presidential committee and ensure the continued momentum of the reforms already in motion. His expertise is expected to provide strategic direction in implementing policies that will transform the livestock industry, boost economic productivity, and improve food security across the nation.
The appointment signals the Tinubu administration’s commitment to addressing key issues in the agricultural sector, with a focus on fostering economic growth and ensuring sustainable livestock management practices in Nigeria.
