The death toll from Wednesday’s gas tanker explosion in the Karu area of Abuja has risen to 10, according to the Acting Director-General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed. He disclosed this to journalists on Thursday in Abuja.
The incident occurred when a gas truck driver lost control near Karu Bridge while heading toward Nyanya along the Abuja-Keffi expressway, crashing into vehicles caught in traffic. The collision triggered a massive explosion, causing widespread destruction.

Mohammed reported that five victims were confirmed dead at the scene, with four bodies burned beyond recognition. Another victim succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital on Wednesday.
“This morning when I asked my officials to go round, they discovered that four others had died in the hospital. This brings the death toll to 10,” Mohammed said.
He urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and avoid reckless driving to prevent such tragedies in the future.
