A yet-to-be-identified tricycle rider on Thursday, July 11, 2024, hanged himself to death at Ogundoyin Area of Ikorodu in Lagos State, Nigeria after the officers of The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), refused to release the tricycle seized from him.
Information revealed that the deceased was stopped by LASTMA officer and confiscate his tricycle popularly called Keke Marwa, which is used for commercial purpose in Nigeria.
The officers, who did not tell him the offence committed took the tricycle to their office located near Jubilee Estate, along Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway.
When the efforts to retrieve his tricycle failed because he was unable to pay N30,000 demanded by the officers, the man hanged himself on a tree in front of a compound housing the offices of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and Vehicle Inspection Officer and hanged himself.
Speaking on the incident, LASTMA spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo denied the agency’s involvement in the incident, stating that no tricycle was impounded and brought to their compound.
He said, ” We don’t know anything about the incident. and within our premises, we don’t have any tricycle impounded by any of our officers in that area. So, LASTMA is not involved in anything of such, and we don’t know anything about the hanging of the dead body.”
