Two persons were killed and about seven others were injured when a Toyota Sienna bus ran into commuters on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway in Gudugba village, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The fatal accident occurred around 7:30am on Saturday, September 25, 2021, involving three vehicles: a brown Ford with registration number AAAB 439 XB, Toyota Sienna KRD 900GV and Yellow Tricycle with registration number AKM 791 VP.
The spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps in the state, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident.
Akinbiyi added that the accident was as a result of brake failure while avoiding a pothole.
He explained, “According to eyewitness account, the Toyota Sienna driver was speeding and in its attempt to avoid a pothole, lost control and ran into commuters by the roadside waiting to board a bus to their destination.
“In the process, two casualties were presumed dead, a minor (whose mother was alive) and an old man, while seven other commuters were injured, with one alive.
“The driver of the Toyota Sienna vehicle has been arrested and taken to Itori Divisional Police Station, with other accidented vehicles involved in the multiple crash.”
The TRACE Corps, however, commiserated with the families of the deceased.
Akinbiyi admonished drivers to please regulate their speed and avoid speeding.
He urged traders to stop displaying their wares on the road and advised commuters to always stand at designated bus stops to board vehicles to their destinations.
