The Enugu State Police Command says it has arrested two brothers for allegedly killing a security guard and his 12-year-old son in an attempt to steal and sell their uncle’s car.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Ndukwe said the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, ordered that the siblings be prosecuted after the investigation.
He said the suspects, Chinedu Nnaona, 25, and Maduabuchi Nnaona, 21, who hail from Onuakpaka, Ndiagu-Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state were arrested on March 13, 2023, by policemen attached to the Uwani Police Division.
He said their arrest was sequel to an earlier report received at Nkanu West Police Division on March 12, alleging the murder of one Christian Ngene, who is the security guard and caretaker of the hometown residence of the suspects’ uncle, Onuakpaka Ndiagu-Akpugo, and his 12-year-old son, Promise Ngene.
The statement partly read, “Upon receipt of the report, police operatives from the division swiftly moved to the scene, found and evacuated the lifeless bodies of the victims to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead by doctors and their remains deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Two knives, two hand gloves and broken pieces of a concrete baluster, used by the suspects to perfect the act, were recovered at the scene.”
Ndukwe added that the suspects, during the preliminary investigation, confessed to having committed the crime, adding that “they conspired and left Port-Harcourt, Rivers State where they reside with their parents, and went to the mentioned home address, with the sole aim of stealing and selling their uncle’s Mitsubishi Grandis car, parked in his said hometown compound.
“To perfect their plan, they procured the knives, proceeded to the building in the early hours of March 12 and scaled the fence to gain access into the compound. And to further gain access into the main building to get the car’s key, they used the baluster to attack the security guard to get the building’s keys from him.
“He resisted, but they overpowered him and used the knives to severally stab him to death.
“They went ahead to stab and murder his said son, who was sleeping, to avoid their being exposed by him. They then gained access and ransacked the entire building in search of the car key, but were unsuccessful.
“Upon daybreak, they escaped to Maryland Enugu, from where they were arrested by police operatives while trying to treat injuries the deceased security guard inflicted on them in an attempt to resist and defend himself from their murderous attack.”
Describing the incident as sad, barbaric and heinous, the police spokesman quoted the commissioner, Ammani, to have ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to accelerate and conclude the ongoing investigation into the case within a record time and arraign the suspects.
