Strong indications have emerged that the 76 years old Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, will continue to rule the country for the next five years as the official results of the nation’s 2021 presidential election so far released reveal that he is leading.
In a swift reaction, the 38 year old Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the opposition leader and a presidential candidate in the election, has rejected the result of the election, saying that the election has been massively rigged.
Reports from Uganda show that Museveni is ahead in the provisional results released on Friday January 15, 2021.
So far, with around a quarter of votes counted, Museveni has 65 per cent and Bobi Wine has 27 per cent.
Claiming in a press conference that the election was marred by “widespread fraud”, he said, “I am very confident that we defeated the dictator by far. I call upon all Ugandans to reject the blackmail. We have certainly won the election and we’ve won it by far”.
The country has entered the third day of a state-imposed internet blackout as President Museveni is ensuring that the means of mass communication are strictly under his control. Also, both military and police were generously used against the opposition during campaign, election, counting and official release of the partial results.
As at the time of filing this report, armed to the teeth military men have surrounded the house of Bobi Wine.
The final result is expected to be announced on Saturday January 16, 2021.
