The University of Ibadan (UI), has been thrown into mourning as a member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Ifeanyi Prinuel Onyeonoru, today was confirmed dead.
According to a source at the institution’s health centre (Jaja Clinic), the professor of Sociology was “brought in dead” to the facility at midnight. She said, “The professor was brought in dead at 12 am.” However, the cause of his death is unknown.
Onyeonoru, a professor of Industrial Sociology and Employment Relations delivered his inaugural lecture titled, “Architecture of Industrial Peace and Conflict: Tension, Diction and Contradictions”, on Thursday, June 18, 2015.
The deceased obtained his First Degree B.Sc. in Sociology from Imo University, Okigwe in 1986, and his M.Sc. and PhD from the University of Ibadan in 1988 and 1994 respectively.
He was employed in the nation’s Premier University as a Graduate Assistant in 1990, a position he maintained till 1991 after which he was elevated to Lecturer II. Onyeonoru rose through the rank and file in academics to become a professor.
He has served the university in various capacities including Head of Department (HOD), Sociology and Director of Career Development and Counselling Center (CDCC).
