A Professor at the Department of Physiotherapy Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Tal-hatu Kolapo Hamzat, has died in the early hours of today, January 11, 2023.
T.K Hamzat, a Professor of Neurological Physiotherapy, was 52.
His demise was announced by the Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof Olayinka Omigbodun.
Born on June 15, 1970, Hamzat studied Physiotherapy at the University of Ibadan and obtained a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with Second Class-Upper Division in March 1994.
He obtained a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Physiology of Exercise (with distinction grade) at the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education in May 1998. In February 2001 from the Department of Physiotherapy, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, he obtained a PhD in Neurological Physiotherapy as the first person to obtain a PhD degree in physiotherapy from any University in West Africa.
His professional academic career started at the Department of Physiotherapy College of Medicine, University of Ibadan on 23 August, 2001 as a Lecturer-I and was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in October 2004. On October 1, 2009 as a high flyer he was promoted from the rank of Senior lecturer to the grade of Professor of Physiotherapy, becoming the first professor of Neurological Physiotherapy in Africa at the age of 39 years, the youngest to attain a full professor of physiotherapy status in Africa.
He served as the University of Ibadan Orator from 2015-2020.
Prof T.K Hamzat was described by his colleagues as humble, respectful, dutiful, brilliant and intelligent.
