The University of Ibadan (UI), has promoted Dr Olajide Akanji of the Department of Political Science, and Dr Oludayo Tade of the Department of Sociology, both from the Faculty of The Social Sciences, as well as Dr Sunday Adesina Bukunmi, of the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, to full professors.
While Professor Tade, a renowned Criminologist, Communication expert, and journalist, and Professor Sunday were promoted from Senior Lecturer, Professor Akanji was promoted from the rank of Reader, otherwise known as Associate Professor to Full Professor.
While Professor Akanji holds a B. Sc. from the University of Ife (UNIFE) now Obafemi Awolowo University, M. Sc., and PhD from UI, Professor Tade and Professor Sunday obtained a B. Sc./B. A., M.Sc./M.A., and PhD from UI.
In a swift reaction, the Oyo State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Demola Babalola, who described Tade as his friend and brother of over 20 years stated, “Your promotion to the prestigious rank of Professor is a testament to your unwavering dedication, hard work and excellence in the field of Criminology and Security Studies.”
“Today, Thursday, June 6th, 2024, will be etched in memory as the day your years of tireless efforts were officially recognized by the University of Ibadan’s Central Appointment and Promotion Meeting. Your new title, Professor of Criminology and Security Studies, Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan, is a well-deserved honour, effective from 2022. Your academic journey has been a remarkable one and this achievement is a culmination of your passion, expertise and commitment to scholarship. Your contributions to the field will continue to inspire and impact generations to come”, he concluded.
Felicitating with Professor Sunday, Professor Olumuyiwa Olusesan Familusi of the Department of Religious Studies wrote on his Facebook page, “Behold, the newest Professor in town! Hearty congratulations to a colleague, brother and friend, Professor Adesina B. Sunday. To God be the glory. Greater heights in Jesus name.”
