The Senate of the University of Ibadan (UI), on May 17, 2021, recommended the appointment of the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Premier University, Professor Adebola Ekanola for another six months.
With this development, the tenure of Ekanola as Acting Vice Chancellor would be extended to Sunday October 31, 2021.
It would be recalled that with the expiration of the tenure of Prof. Idowu Olayinka as Vice Chancellor (VC) on November 30, 2020, the Governing Council, on the recommendation of the Senate of the institution, appointed Prof. Ekanola as Acting Vice Chancellor for a period of six months starting from December 1, 2020.
Following the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent Acting VC on Monday May 31, 2021, the Senate held an Emergency Meeting today to decide what to do in other to avoid a vacuum being created in the office of the institution’s vice chancellor from May 31.
At the meeting, there was a long debate regarding the determination of re-appointment or re-election for the exalted office and it was resolved that there should be a call for fresh nomination which must be put to vote.
The Chairperson of the Meeting, Professor Olayinka Olusola Omigbodun, the Provost of the College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan called for nomination and only Ekanola was nominated for the position.
The nomination was put to vote and 151 Senate members voted in favour of Ekanola, while two members abstained.
Therefore, Ekanola was nominated as Acting Vice Chancellor for a period of six months.
The recommendation of Ekanola is subject to the approval of the Governing Council headed by John Odigie Oyegun, the Chairman and Pro- Chancellor.
