The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode Adebowale has lamented the gross underfunding of federal universities in Nigeria.
Adebowale, who made this lamentation at the commissioning of the self-help renovated Head of Department’s office in the Department of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Education, said that poor funding is adversely affecting the federal universities as the government keeps giving inadequate funds and making policies that are very limiting to tertiary institutions.
The multimillion-naira self-help project was donated by the alumni and friends of the Department of Human Kinetics.
Noting that adequate funding is very critical to sustaining tertiary institutions and making teaching and learning conducive, the Vice Chancellor of the nation’s Premier University opined that in a bid to sustain the legacy of Nigerian tertiary institutions, it has become imperative for the private sectors and well meaning Nigerians to compliment the efforts of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Needs Assessment, and Capital Appropriation Grant to provide needed support to Nigerian universities.
He said, “Government alone cannot run universities. Some hands must have to come to support. We run around to scout for funds for the university.”
