The selection committee of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Friday has picked Professor Folasade Ogunsola as the 13th substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Ogunsola, who is the daughter of the late eminent geographer, Prof. Akin Mabogunje, would be the first female to occupy the position in the 60-year-old institution.
She has served the university in various capacities, including Provost of the College of Medicine in Idi Araba, Lagos and deputy vice chancellor.
During the crisis that engulfed the institution about two years ago, when the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe was removed from office by the then Governing Council led by Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN, she served as the acting VC for about three months before the Federal Government reinstated Ogundipe.
Ogundipe is billed to end his five-year single term of office on November 11, 2022.
Ogunsola is a professor of Medical Microbiology and a consultant clinical microbiologist and infection control for the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
Born in 1958, Ogunsola holds a PhD in Medical Microbiology, an MSc in Medical Microbiology with Distinction, and a Diploma in Biomedical Techniques from the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, among others.
She is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, West African College of Physicians, National Postgraduate Medical College in Pathology, Nigerian Academy of Science, and Foundation Fellow of both the Nigerian Academy of Medicine and the Academy of Medicine Specialties.
