Nurse Sandra Lindsay became the first New Yorker and one of the first people in the United States of America to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine at 9:23am on December 14, 2020.
The vaccination was administered at Long Island Jewish Medical Center by Dr. Michelle Chester at the live-streamed event to kickstart the biggest vaccination campaign in US history as the vaccine was administered to health care workers at the state of New York.
“This is the light at the end of the tunnel. But it’s a long tunnel,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as he watched Lindsay’s vaccination via video.
Several other countries also have approved the vaccine, including the United Kingdom, which started vaccinating last week.
Health care workers, along with nursing home residents, will be first in line for the vaccination, which is expected to provide protection from COVID-19 and beat back the pandemic.
However, as the shots can cause temporary fever, fatigue and aches as they rev up people’s immune systems, hospitals are forced to stagger employee vaccinations.
