A Nigerian Veteran journalist, Chief Dayo Duyile, on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, defended his PhD thesis at the Postgraduate School, University of Lagos (Unilag), Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria, at 80.
According to the information gathered, Dr Duyile is now the oldest PhD graduate of the University.
The information further revealed that the University has penciled down Dr Duyile for an official celebration and special recognition at the January 18, 2023 Postgraduate Convocation for being the oldest Ph. D candidate of the institution.
Born October 10, 1942, in Ondo town, Ondo State, Duyile attended Catholic Primary School, Okitipupa, 1947, Anglican Primary School, Okitipupa. 1949, St Luke’s Secondary Modern School, Okitipupa, 1955, Ibadan General Certificate of Education Classes, 1959, University of Lagos, Akoka, 1972-76 and finished his Master’s degree in 1990 in Unilag.
He started his journalism career with Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s newspaper known as Southern Nigerian Defender, as a reporter-in-trainee, after which he joined Tribune in the late 1960s.
In 1963, he joined the editorial department of the Daily Times and three years after, he was at the Western Nigeria Television (WNTV-WNBS), Ibadan, as a reporter/sub-editor from 1966 to 1975. He worked with Drum Magazine, 1972-75. He was appointed editor of Daily Sketch Newspapers, the position he held between 1976-78 and Acting General Manager of the newspaper company, 1978-79.
He worked as Training Manager of Concord Press Limited, 1980-1982. He was Director of the from Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos from 1989 to 1995, having served as Assistant Director from 1986-89, Public Relations Consultant, 1983-85; Assistant Director, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, 1986-88; acting Director, July 1988 and later director, between 1989 to 1995.
He started his academic career in 2006 and he had worked in four Nigerian universities: Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State (as Head of the Department of Mass Communication); Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State (also as a senior lecturer and HoD); Wesley University of Science and Technology, Ondo and Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.
He was a member Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ); a member of the Commonwealth Press Union; pioneer President and Commonwealth Journalist Association, Nigerian Chapter. He is the Maiyegun of Ogere, Ijebu Remo.
As a politician, he was the Publicity Secretary, banned National Party of Nigeria, Oyo State Chapter, 1982-83.
Among the scholarly papers, he has to his credit are Media and Mass Communication in Nigeria (Gong Communications Limited, 1979); Makers of Nigerian Press (Gong Communications, 1988); Ethics of Journalism in Africa (Gong Communications) and Public Relations for West Africa (Gong Communications.
