Nigeria has been experiencing stampede since Thursday, October 22, 2020 as residents and hoodlums storm warehouses in states’ capital and major cities where palliatives from the Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) are believed to have been hoarded.
Among the states where these ware houses were discovered were: Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Plateau, Kwara and Edo States.
Items carted away include, packs of noodles and bags of rice.
The incident has further exposed the endemic corruption in Nigeria as the food items were expected to have been distributed to Nigerians to cushion the effect of Coronavirus as a result of the inability of the residents to engage in economic activities due to lockdown.
The residents were seen angrily parking the items because they alleged that those who are in charge of the distribution of these materials hid them with the intension of selling and making huge money out of the deal, while leaving the masses to die in hunger.
The invasions were carried out by men and women of all ages as they tried their best to take as much as they can carry. People were carrying in rounds.
The residents did not limit their operations to the ware houses, they extended their operations to residences of politicians to cart away their property, and also loot shops and shopping malls.
In Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, the residence of Senator Teslim Folarin representing Oyo Central Senatorial District was invaded, with hoodlums carting away hundreds of new motorcycles, grounding machines, fridges and power generating sets, among others.
Also, hoodlums invaded the houses of former Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba representing Cross River Central Senatorial District Senator and Senator Gershom Bassey, representing Southern Senatorial District where their property were carted away.
