The chairmanship election of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Enugu State branch held on Thursday August 6 2020 at the Michael Okpara square, ended in disaster as members engaged in a free for all fight following allegations of manipulations in favour of a particular candidate by the outgoing leadership.
Some thugs, allegedly sponsored by a faction of the body, stormed the venue with dangerous weapons while voting was going on and started destroying chairs, tables and canopies among other objects being used for the election.
They upturned the ballot boxes and pounced on members of the electoral committee leading to the doctors scampering to safety for fear of losing their lives.
It was gathered that trouble started when some members of the association felt that their candidate was being rigged out of the election and decided to disrupt the election.
It was also gathered that the election was conducted despite a court injunction restraining its conduct.
A contestant Dr Onyia, a resident in Parklane Hospital Enugu, sustained deep machete cuts around the head and arms, while some others, including the NMA chairman in the state, Dr Ike Okwesili, sustained varying forms of injuries.
Policemen who were drafted to the venue of the election had hectic time preventing major casualties.
