The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered discreet investigations into a viral video in which a policeman was recorded harassing a young lady who claimed to have just concluded the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Programme.
In the clip, which was recorded by the policeman, the handcuffed lady initially laid on the ground in a large compound with several cars parked. The policeman continued to taunt the lady who did not want her face shown on camera. He insisted that she show her face while he was interrogating her in a dehumanising manner, and she tried to explain herself in Yoruba.
The viral video has generated a lot of reactions from the Nigerian public as the action of the officer has been condemned for making the lady a subject of ridicule and for embarrassing her family in such a manner.
Reacting to the situation, the Nigeria Police, in a statement on Twitter, stated, “The Inspector General of Police has ordered discreet investigations into the circumstances surrounding the dehumanizing treatment meted out to a female citizen in the above viral video.
“The IGP, while condemning the act, has directed the commencement of comprehensive investigations aimed at unraveling the true identity of the perpetrators with a view to bringing them to justice.
“Members of the public are hereby assured that any member of the Force found culpable in the incident will be made to face appropriate sanctions”.
This is harassment by the Ibadan arm of the Nigerian Police. Even if she’s guilty what sort of questions and harassment is this? @kikimordi @ozzyetomi @StandtoEndRape pic.twitter.com/aeB9kvfMBL
