Residents of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State on Monday, February 19, 2024, staged a peaceful protest to show their displeasure on the economic hardship Nigerians are experiencing.
The security operatives comprising soldiers, police, civil defence, and members of Amotekun were on the ground to prevent the protest from snowballing into a crisis.
The Oyo State Police Command in a statement stated, “Good Afternoon Fam! Oyo police was out to observe the Mokola police. This was necessary to protect the lives and property of the good citizens of Oyo inclusive of those on the procession. We understand that hoodlums could hijack the process, hence the need to be proactive.”
The youth armed with placards and Nigerian flags were shouting, “President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Ole (thief)”, urging everyone to come out of their houses and join the protest.
Some of the placards they were holding read: “We are hungry, Tinubu”, “Tinubu has betrayed Nigerians”, Tinubu quit if you know that you don’t have a solution to our problems”, and “No food, no water, no light, no hospital, we are dying o.”
Other placards read, “It is not compulsory that we must stay together, divide Nigeria”, “End bad government, Tinubu soriburuku”, ‘Gaari is N1000, ?”, “End hardship”, “This is not the democracy we hope for”, “Mr. President, this is not the hope, this is shege”, and “No more Emilokan, no more elofokanbale.”
