Nigerians have started reacting to the demolition of Prodest Hotel and Etemeteh Hotel by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in the state.
The governor had imposed a lockdown in the state and directed all hotels in the state to shutdown as parts of measures to check the spread of COVID-19.
The demolitions, which were carried out today, were personally supervised by the governor.
While some of those who reacted faulted Gov. Wike’s actions, some Nigerians believe that the violators should have respected the state government’s lockdown order and the action will serve as deterrents to others.
These are some of the reactions on Twitter:
Ahmed Nura Kubau @KubauNura – “Dear gov@wike, demolition hotels and other structures in River State for flouting lockdown order is not the best way to impose the order, why don’t you ask them to pay heavy penelty to the river state government”.
Monarch⚜@the_movic – “Truth is Wike might have overdone it with the demolition, but for most Nigerians to receive sense you have to overdo sometimes. At least now we know no hotel will violate the order for the time being”.
Fredsaint – 101 @Fredsaintgmail1 – “In as much as I may not take the option of hotel demolition, I still support Wike action. Nigs are playing with covid-19. With our percentage of Hiv, Hepatitis, Diabetes and other immunology diseases, we are bound to loose tens of millions if full community infection is allowed”.
ElishaBisong @BisongElisha – “I so much respect Gov. Wike for his good governance towards the good people of River state. but with this, am so disappointed. instead of demolition, why not seal it for a period of time”.
the6_GOD @jumbo_pere – “People that are against Governor Wike demolition of prodest hotel at eleme should provide legal backing of him abusing his office”.
Sally Suleiman @is_salsu – “In as much as I don’t support Wike’s demolition of that hotel, but why are Nigerians so stubborn and disobedient? They are just so difficult to handle. If you don’t follow them with iron hand you would barely achieve results. It’s terrible how some Nigerians behave”.
