Somalia’s parliament has removed Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Khaire from his post in a vote of no confidence on Saturday for failing to pave the way towards fully democratic elections, the speaker said.
The no-confidence motion was backed by 170 out of the 178 MPs. Speaker Mursal Abdulrahman announced the outcome of the vote after the closure of the session saying, “In a quorum of 178 legislators, the government lost the vote of confidence by 170.”
The ouster was immediately endorsed by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who appointed Khaire as prime minister in February 2017.
President Farmajo then appointed Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled to act as caretaker prime minister pending the appointment of a successor to Khaire.
In a last minute master stroke, Farmajo's forces oust Khaire's cabinet in a move designed to cut into a size the prime minister's outsized ambitions regarding the 2021 election #somalia pic.twitter.com/QaDBIMgJTd
