The Senate and industrial unions of the University of Lagos, Akoka, have rejected the removal of Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as Vice Chancellor of the institution by the Governing Council.
The Institution’s Governing Council led by Dr Wale Babalakin, Pro-Chancellor had on Wednesday August 12 2020, in Abuja removed Ogundipe as the VC, accusing him of gross misconduct and acts of corruption.
Reacting, on Thursday August 13 2020, 88 members of the University Senate led by Prof Chioma Agomo, a former Dean of the Faculty of Law, held a meeting at the Ade Ajayi Main auditorium and declared that the removal of Ogundipe was against UNILAG’s regulation, adding that the Council removed Ogundipe without giving him the opportunity to defend himself.
The Senate members also rejected the appointment of Prof Omololu Soyombo as Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Industrial unions in the University, operating under the aegis of Joint Staff Union, JSU, also held a Congress on the issue.
The Unions are the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU, the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU.
They resolved that due process must be followed and resolved unanimously that Prof Ogundipe remains the VC of the Institution.
