World Health Organisation, WHO, is agitating over the incredible rise of coronavirus in the world, confirming that it has spread to over about 50 countries.
WHO spokesperson, Christian Lindmeier stated in Geneva, “The outbreak is getting bigger… The scenario of the coronavirus reaching multiple countries, if not all countries around the world, is something we have been looking at and warning against since quite a while”.
However, fear has gripped the African continent as pocket of the virus has been reported in some African countries.
Of recent is a confirmed case of coronavirus in Nigeria, with government at all levels making frantic efforts to curtail it.
However, the Senate, which is the Upper legislative arm in the country has condemned the attitude of the federal government for not given the outbreak the attention it deserves.
Sen. Robert Ajayi Boroffice representing Ondo North, in Ondo State said, “Because of the pandemic nature of the virus, every country in the world is taking preventive measure. Because the wisdom is prevention is better than cure. When we landed in South Africa, we were not allowed to leave the aircraft for good 30 minutes. Officers of the medical corps of the South Africa came into the aircraft and screened everybody before we were allowed to go out of the aircraft. I arrived yesterday at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, there was no screening. All we were given is a sheet of paper to indicate whether we are sick. This is very frightening and I think something has to be done to ensure that we do not give way to a situation which we will not be able to control. We should have been screened before we got out of the aircraft”.
The Senate President also said, “Today every country in the world tries to ensure that if it has coronavirus, it limits it to those that are affected, that it does not go beyond those that are affected. I think whatever the Federal Ministry of Health is doing to curtail this virus is not good enough. We should not take anything for granted. We are not hoping but we must be prepared. Anybody that is coming through all our ports, airports, sea ports and others should be screened. We have to protect the lives of Nigerians. People must be screened when they come into our country. That we are 200m does not mean that we will be happy to lose anybody”.
