The Nigerian youth, particularly, students of public universities, have taken to the social media to call for an end to the protracted strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
It would be recalled that ASUU commenced indefinite strike action on March 23, 2020 over disagreement on Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and failure of the Federal Government to honour its 2019 agreement, which is gradually putting public universities in the state of comatose.
The youth condemned the attitude of the Nigerian government towards education stressing that the government is erred in paying lip service to education.
Some reactions on Twitter:
FitMedic @FEMMY466-“Students were sent home for safety following an infectious outbreak. Now the world has resumed and they have refused to allow the students resume cos FG doesn’t value Nigerian education since their kids are abroad”.
Paschal @PaschalPax-“It’s understandable if Buhari doesn’t care about education. But we have a Vice President that is a professor @ProfOsinbajo. Ordinarily, students being out of school for so long should worry him. But man hasn’t even said anything. We’re on our own”.
Gratis @EuniceEyitanwa – “Offer of admission: October 2018
Resumption: June 2019
Still not in 200level September 2020 and it’s a six-year course
We ain’t getting younger!”
Solomon @Solomon80118338 – “We students needs to take matter in our hands by protesting on a daily basis until the reopen our schools”.
Prestige @Croprestige
“Hello,
I’m a Criminal.
I’m a Nigerian.
I’m a Student.
I have been sentenced indefinitely.
My Crime is my desire to earn a degree from a Public University”
Fafure Adeleke @AdelekeFafure – Honestly it’s not to much to ask these people to settle with asuu what’s so infuriating about this whole ASUUStrike saga is when NLC went on their strike immediately they were answered, why is it that @MBuhari isnt ready to answer asuu, is he saying education is not important”.
Ibrahim Zanna @IYawudima – “Why are we denied of our right to education?”
Fafure Adeleke @AdelekeFafure – “Education is the bed rock of any sane society, for the unprivileged children it’s the hope of a better future, if you take that hope from them what else do they have, what plans can they make to make it out of their slums, education is a basic right for all”.
Akeju | #EndAsuuStrike @AkejuOlusegun1 – It is getting to look like nobody cares. They believe we’ve just been ranting. The @NGRPresident and Nigerian @NigeriaGov don’t take us serious any longer. Answer Asuu’s demands, they are not out of place. Or which ever way, just let us resume. It’s 7 months now”.
As a Boss I @oliviaadama1 – “Home is not where we should be when lecture Halls are empty”.
Afolabi Alawode OFR @AlawodeAfolabii – “Nigerian students should use tomorrow’s #October1stProtest to force FG to meet with ASUU to #EndASUUStrike. It’s high time public universities resumed back”.
Nseobong @NCJ_2 -“My sister left for school this morning and it slapped hard. We came back at the start of the pandemic, but they completed exams, conducted lectures virtually and are now continuing their education. Public school students deserve to continue their education too”.
